Art is exploration of design space
It may sound sour, art reduces to that. So what's design space? One could say it's the world of the possible. Does that accept too many things? So what. Believe art, just like science has come to live in an ivory tower for the common guy. And it shouldn't be the case. It's false that art need to endure or be recorded. Art is about learning outside our conventions. That's why some things are artsy and some are true testimonies of someone was here. As I grow up I learn about the two seemingly opposites phenomena of developing a connoisseur palate. You get to discard a lot of things, because it's more of what you know. Maybe if I read Today, Asimov's Foundation, I wouldn't respect it so much. Yet, when I was young, that book was a marvel. It explored the great idea of psycho-history. To this day, I want sociology to grow up to that way... Now scifi focus not just on conceptual novels, a la Niven, it tries to emphasize character development. And that's the second thing, you get to discern, the relevancy of what you have already explored. That's subtle sense. Though I read long ago Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum", I spent many years without realizing what the heck people see in that book... Luckily tastes develops. So art isn't just the new things, is the things that transforms you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, next gen.
